  1. The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" is also famous for being the very first pop song to feature a synthesizer (a Theremin). The Theremin was roundly hated by the other members of the band.

The Beatles and the Beach Boys (and to some extent, the Byrds) had a running rivalry going at the time to see who could produce the most experimental albums in terms of studio wizardry. "Pet Sounds" was considered the state of the art until the Beatles released "Sgt. Pepper." Brian Wilson and George Martin were the first real "studio wizards."

  2. Thanks for the information Karen! About the Theremin - I always heard it was a theremin as well. However during my research I found that the instrument used was actually a Tannerin - an instrument designed to sound like a Theremin, but controlled with a slider mechanism and a rotating knob. Small detail, but I thought that was interesting.

  3. That is interesting about the true identity of the synthesizer! Thanks for mentioning it.

  4. One more instrumental thing. I always thought that the stringed instrument in the intro of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" was a harp with nylon strings, such as a Celtic harp.

  5. Wow - I never even considered a harp - you could be right!
